Cycling is an Olympic sport that is growing in popularity and a local development camp is looking to help those athletes who hope to one day stand on an Olympic podium.

With this being an Olympic year, there is a lot of focus on cycling but USA Cycling is focusing its efforts on mining young talent in this sport for the future. A big part of that effort is done right here in the Rochester area.

They come from Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina and even the Virgin Islands -- young cyclists who have come to Finger Lakes Community College to see if they have what it takes to be an Olympian.

Canandaigua is one of 12 sites around the country selected by USA Cycling to host a development camp. Twenty-one cyclists are learning from elite coaches and world cycling medalists about what it takes to get to an Olympic podium

Todd Scheske of USA Cycling said, “Some of the older guys are looking at this hey, this is a good pathway and opportunity for me to get tested if I get some results here and bam, I got a start to possibly to the Olympic training Center and the selection process.”

USA Cycling is taking its national effort to the local level, trying to find junior talent.

Brighton's Andrew Pryhuber is thrilled to have this opportunity in his own backyard. “I get a chance to do field testing and get recognized. It's great to meet people from not just around here and to ride with them.”

Penfield's Matt Brophy started cycling as a way to build endurance in high school for cross country. “It’s great to soak up as much information as you can -- sit back and listen to what everyone has to say.”

World Cycling silver medalist Leslee Schenk Trzcinski said, “USA Cycling is supporting junior and elite men. They have training in Europe, housing that's provided in Belgium and Italy for men and women so it's not just domestic racing but getting juniors more into camps like this.”

Brophy said, “It's crazy to be around the level of intensity and commitment those people are putting in. Just to train for what I'm doing -- it's takes it a step further. I can't imagine.”

Because of USA’s Cycling's renewed efforts, the U.S. team is one the top three teams ranked in the world.
